UPDATE ON SUMMER TOURNAMENT RESULTS FOR BRJTF SCHOLARSHIP CHAMPIONS

Below are the summer tournament results for our five BRJTF scholarship students. Their results are truly incredible! They remind me of Oklahoma junior players' successes in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. We are SO proud of your improvements!

IAN WU

Ian finished 4th in the 5A Oklahoma High School State Tennis Championships.

Ian played the Level 4 Boy's 16 MV tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center June 1-2, beating two players ranked in the top 500 nationally and reached the finals of the consolation draw!

TY TAYLOR

Ty played St. Louis Level 4 Open #4 in Boy’s 16’s; July 19-21. He came in 3rd place winning the semi-final playoff! Ty played doubles with JP where they also finished 3rd.

Then he played The Battle of Mississippi and again played doubles with JP. The event was held at the University of Minnesota; July 26-28.

He also played Level 4 USTA MV Boy’s 16; La Fortune Park, Tulsa, OK; August 31 to September 2; Ty finished third place.

In April, Ty had a national ranking of 803 and his current ranking is now a 428. His WTN went from a 21.28 to a 19.5. And his UTR is now a 9.5.

QUOTE FROM PATRICK TAYLOR (Ty's Father):  Dear Bill and Bryan: “Without the generosity and support of the Bill Rompf Junior Tennis Foundation Ty would never have progressed as far as he has this summer and his tremendous jump in rankings. We truly appreciate the kindness from you and your members. Thank you. Words cannot express our gratitude. On a side note…the assistant coach for Navy contacted us three weeks ago to see if Ty was interested in committing to them. He’s just 15 so we won’t make a commitment to a college anytime soon, but that offer was a major boost for him to now know that D1 coaches are looking at him already. Again this is because of your foundation’s help."

PENELOPE SMITH

Penelope played the Level 2 in Austin, TX at the St. Stephen’s School June 29-July 1; She won 2 matches and lost 2 matches.

Then she played the St. Louis Level 4 Open #4 in Girls 16’s; July 20-22. She lost to the #1 seed in the rd of16’s, then won the consolations back draw.

And then at The Oklahoma City, Level 5 Open; July 26-28, she won the quarterfinal play off for 5th place.

Penelope qualified for National Hardcourts Level 1, Girl’s 14’s in Rome, GA, August 3 to 10; she lost in first round of main draw in a close match and then again in consolations in 3 sets.

Lastly, she played the Level 4 USTA MV Girl’s 16; La Fortune Park, Tulsa, OK; August 31 to September 2nd; where she came in third place beating the #1 and #4 seeds.

Her UTR has moved up to 7.02 from 4.9 in 2024.

TAYTUM JONES

Taytum played the Level 4 Mid-America Mashup, in St. Louis, June 28 – 30; he won his first match and then lost 10-8 in a tiebreak third set in his second match; and then won his third match 10-8 in a third set tiebreak (3 hour match). He finally lost in his fourth match; his final result was two wins and two losses.

Then he played The Battle of Mississippi July 26-28 at the University of Minnesota where he won his first match and lost his second and third matches.

QUOTE FROM STARLA BURKS (Taytum’s Mother):  "Extremely grateful for this experience and opportunity, you have given this tennis family. Thank you all so much for all of these opportunities! So many doors have opened up for these young men and now they get to do this thing called Tennis Together!"
